The Name of the 2009 Flu Epidemic

No matter what you call the disease; Mexican flu, swine flu, H1N1, North American flu, Novel flu; it will not affect what harm this disease will have on the human population. For simplistic purposes following the established pattern the world has been using we will call this new strain the Mexican flu because in the long term these flu outbreaks have taken on a locality such as Spanish Flu, Asian Flu, etc.

The Center for Disease Control of America has isolated this strain of the flu. It was discovered that this is a new strain of the influenza disease. It has swine, bird and human genes present. The CDC has officially classified this new strain as belonging to a type H1N1 family. The CDC has suggested that this new strain be called H1N1. The reason given is that some people have confused the name with how infection happens and governments have killed pigs or swine because they fear their population could become infected from pork. It has been proven that consuming pork cannot spread this disease and there is not one single case of an infected pig in the world.

The government of Israel has suggested the new strain be named Mexican flu. Their reasoning is because the swine or pig is an offensive animal according to Jewish and other religious beliefs. The W.H.O. has suggested it be named the North American Influenza for the safety and health concerns of animals.

But just the discussion and disagreement of how to properly name the pandemic of the Mexican flu 2009 shows that even this little detail will cause controversy in the world today. How are the governments ever going to get together and protect the populations of their countries from this disease if they can’t even get past the name. The worst of the Mexican flu is still before us, I hope that the governments of the world get their acts together and concentrate on what is important, saving human lives.
