One of the schools in Syracuse, NY has one student that contracted the Mexican Flu from association with a student in Queens, NY and the school announced that they will be closed for a week starting on Monday May 4th.

Quoted in part from the news announcement.
“Syracuse, NY — A student at Syracuse’s Ed Smith Elementary School has come down with swine flu, so the school will be closed all this week, Onondaga County Health Commissioner Cynthia Morrow announced today.

The student has a connection to the Queens school where the outbreak was first noticed after students there returned from a trip to Mexico.

The state Health Department laboratory confirmed the student has H1N1 swine origin influenza, Morrow said. The case is not official until the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirms the test, but the state finding is enough to warrant the school be closed, she said”

It would seem that the strain of Mexican Flu that is spreading around might not be as deadly as predicted, however it sure seems that it still is highly contagious and the public should definitely remain aware of it and take special care to lessen the transfer of the virus.

With the number of deaths from the Mexican flu now in the triple digits and the WHO having raised their alert level to the status of pandemic is imminent, what are countries around the world doing to protect their populations for this deadly outbreak of disease?

The Mexican government has handed out masks, closed all sporting event to spectators and have asked all civilians to stay home for the next week.

The president of the United States has gone public and asked all Americans to cover their mouths when coughing and to wash their hands. The federal government has also shipped 12 million doses of flu fighting medication to states just in case of it is needed.

Travelers from Mexico and other parts of North America are being scanned, temperatures taken or being observed for any signs of flu like symptoms upon entering most countries like Russia, China, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and the Philippines.

Containment of the Mexican flu to the country of origin has already broken down with over 11 countries reported confirmed cases of the disease. The CDC has also released a statement confirming that last year’s vaccine will give any protection against this new strain of the flu virus.

Most countries have given the advice that their citizens should follow proper hygiene to help contain this disease and the British government is even handing out pamphlets on what this is. But is it too late? This disease will be contained on the planet earth that is almost assured as long as members of the space station stay in orbit, but since there are reports of suspected victims on every continent within 2 weeks of the first death, that is all the containment this world can hope for from the Mexican flu 2009.

Just in case you thought we were making this story up, here is a video that shows that the Border Patrol Agents may not protect their health  by wearing a breathing mask while dealing with people in their job.

Is this incredible or what?

As with the origins of Swine flu, the origin of the Mexican flu is close to being determined. There is a pig farm just miles from the first recorded cases of infection. This is the most scientific analogy so far. There are some in the internet blaming this outbreak on al Qaeda and the Mexican drug lords or even the large Pharmaceutical companies that manufacture antiviral drugs. There will always be those with conspiracy theories but scientific research and determination is always the best way to solve any question.

What is well known and documented is that the pig can host many different viruses at once. A pig’s diet is largely to blame for this; they are nature’s garbage disposals. Since their body can harbor many different viruses at once and they can stay relatively health, the viruses mutate or combine with other viruses and create a new strain. The first known virus of the H1N1 variety was discovered in the American swine population in 1930, and from there the spreading throughout the population has occurred. Over 50% of the swine in North America have been found to have antibodies against the H1N1 flu virus, which can be translated that over half of the pigs in North America have had this virus at some time in their life.

When humans come in close contact with an infected pig the virus has a chance to migrate to the new human hosts. This is not every time nor often but it has occurred. The creation of the Mexican flu is not the first 1900’s pandemic of the swine flu virus and a conspiracy of a secret weapons laboratory releasing this virus is about as real as there is life on the sun.

This writer is very concerned about the Mexican Flu 2009 as we had a death in our family from the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.  It is said that from 30 to 50 million people died during that pandemic and my father’s older sister was one of them.  Dad talked about that episode in his family’s history often and he was always sad about the fact that she was struck down as a young adult.

We believe this video of Elizabeth Ann is typical of the feelings throughout the world right now due to the Mexican Flu 2009.  She is worried that if this spreads further that she would rather be home in the USA with her family and excellent medical care, than to be in a foreign land such as Costa Rica.

The U.S. Vice President, Joe Biden, warned on a TV program today that he would advise not to travel on airplanes or subways or be in any confined spaces with lots of other people during this Mexican Flu outbreak.

The administration when asked agreed that his statement was in keeping with their over all assessment and recommendations also.

We suggest that you all should read the World Health Organization (WHO) Checklist for Influenza Pandemic Such as this Mexican Flu 2009

This is a very sincere and sobering document.

World Health Organization (W.H.O.)
Department of Communicable Disease
Surveillance and Response
Global Influenza Programme

WHO checklist for
influenza pandemic
preparedness planning

Starts out with “Some time in the future.”
(Note: that some time is now!)

Very detailed official list of what governemts, medical care treatment centers, and individuals should do in a pandemic such as this Mexican Flu 2009 outbreak.

“Are you prepared?”
“Consequences of an influenza pandemic”

Previous pandemics officially named as; “1918 (H1N1, the Spanish flu),
1957 (H2N2, the Asian flu) and 1968 (H3N2, the Hong Kong flu.)”
(Is there anyone that can deny that this one will become officially known as “the Mexican Flu 2009″?)

The check list is arranged thusly:
“The checklist is intended to be comprehensive. It has been divided into
the following main sections:
— Preparing for an emergency
— Surveillance
— Case investigation and treatment
— Preventing spread of the disease in the community
— Maintaining essential services
— Research and evaluation
— Implementation, testing and revision of the national plan”

This is excellent information officially published by the world Health Organization and is the program that has been ordered to be put in place immediately by all members of the W.H.O. throughout the world.

You should read it too!

Many countries around the world have taken what they think are the correct actions to protect their population against the Mexican Flu 2009 virus. Schools are being closed across America.  Not only has Egypt ordered the slaughter of all the pigs in the country but have also issued a no kissing order for its population. Lebanon has issued a similar order to stop the traditional greeting of kissing on the checks.

Airports around the globe are on high alert. Many are using the thermal cameras to scan passengers. These were first installed during the SARS breakout a few years ago. Some airlines have even placed doctors on flights from Mexico. This is so the passengers can be inspected before they land and passengers that are suspected as infected can be quarantined.

Macedonia, China, Russia and the Ukraine have stopped all imports of pigs to their countries. Experts have repeatedly issued statements claiming a person cannot contract the Mexican flu from pork or pork products but the world is ignoring their advice.

The Northern Hemisphere normal flu season is at its end. This new outbreak could subside for months and come back with a vengeance next fall like other epidemics have in the past. This is the biggest fear of the Professor Neil Ferguson of the WHO. If 30 to 40% of the world becomes infected next fall then it will truly be a pandemic.

Professor John Oxford at Barts and London sees no need for the world to worry too much. Unlike the avian flu H5N1, he states most of the world’s population has a natural immunity to the Mexican flu virus and he believes the virus will not sweep around the world and large numbers of people will not die of this disease.

The fact is less than 200 people have died from the Mexican flu 2009 so far. The infected have covered the world by mass deaths are not happening as with the 1918 Spanish flu virus. The Mexican flu 2009 is dangerous but not necessarily deadly to everyone as other outbreaks of the past have been.

This just in.  President Obama’s Press Secretary Gibbs reports.

A man who was a member of the security advance team for President Obama’s recent trip to Mexico is suspected of having contracted the swine flu and transmitted it to his family in Anne Arundel County, the White House said today.

The man is on the staff of Energy Secretary Steven Chu, who traveled with Obama to Mexico on April 16. He appears to have transmitted the virus to his wife, son and nephew, press secretary Robert Gibbs said.
