What is the Flu? (General Information)

The Flu bug as it is commonly referred to, is really Influenza.
This is a virus that has two basic strains, A and B. This virus is an extremely contagious respiratory illness that is most common during the colder months of winter and early spring. The flu virus is an evolving disease that is constantly changing and modifying itself. Last year’s vaccine will usually do little to prevent this year’s strain from infecting a vaccinated person.

The most common symptoms are lung congestion that most likely produces flem, a sore or irritated throat, sneezing, fever headaches and body aches. The flu generally last only a few days where the body is very weak and always tired. An infected person usually does not show any signs until one to five days have passed by, so just because you and your family members feel ok, take the proper precautions just in case.

The flu virus is easy transmitted from person to person. This is an airborne disease that is quickly absorbed by the human body. Every sneeze and cough from an infected person expels the virus from their body into the air. The virus is generally not absorbed through the skin but readily finds access through the many openings in the human body. A persons eyes, ears, mouth, reproductive organs, rectum and any cut is a path for this very active and determined virus.

Most people become infected because of bad hygiene. It has been proven that a healthy person can not only be around but care for an infected person if the proper precautions are taken. These include the constant washing of hands, the proper wearing of a mask over the mouth and nose, the sterilization of all item that the infected person MAY have come in contact with or breathed on and the use of and anti-bacterial and virus spray like Lysol.

The best defense is to avoid large public gatherings like sporting events, movies, daycares and public transportation to name a few. Lastly there are a few antiviral medications on the market but antibiotics have no effect on viruses. The best cure if you get the flu is plenty of sleep.

Note: the preceding is general information on normal flu conditions.  It is not meant to be taken as medical advice and we do not give medical advice.  This is an information only website and you should consult a physician immediately if you suspect any flu symptoms.
